Bows really only come into their own with a high Strength and iterative attacks. They do a good amount of damage, have a great range, and don't require a Martial Weapon Proficiency. While you're in deep trouble if you need it, you can also wear a spiked gauntlet to threaten nearby opponents (and it seems appropriate for a fiendish-type).įor a low-Strength character, crossbows are an excellent choice for a ranged weapon. It does good damage, but more importantly you at least have a chance to take a stab at most opponents before they get close and maul you. Just pick it purely for flavor reasons, and don't expect to use it in a real fight.īut it doesn't hurt to have a backup weapon, in case something slips through. It's good for showing off to mooks and commoners, and it's helps prevent you from being labeled (and targeted) as a magic using type. There's nothing wrong with a rapier for instance. Ranged weapons however can be fairly effective at low levels, since spells are less powerful and less common, the warriors don't yet have obscene bonuses, and you don't have to stand next to something that'll chew through your low hp and AC in no time at all. Melee against a level-appropriate opponent will get you killed, fast. ![]() D&D rewards specialists, so there aren't any really good choices for a tertiary combatant like an artificer.
